THE FOLLOWING IS A REPRINT ON MY COMMENT ON REDDIT TMJ SITE

A new article “Subjective Sleep Quality Deteriorates Before Development of Painful Temporomandibular Disorder” (see link below) Found Sleep is primary predictor of development of TMD.
“Sleep quality was a stronger predictor of TMD than well established TMD risk factors.” I lecture on the common developmental aspects of TMJ disorders and Sleep Apnea, one of many sleep disorders related to nasal pharyngeal airway. I did research at Rush Medical School in the 1980’s about jaw position and sleep apnea and found that the jaw position of sleep apneics was similar to TMJ patients when measured utilizing tools commonly employed in physiologic dentistry. “•Subjective sleep quality worsened progressively before the onset of painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD). •Sleep quality was stable over time in participants who remained free of TMD. •Sleep quality was a stronger predictor of TMD than well established TMD risk factors. •Worsening sleep quality did not predict an increase in pain sensitivity. •Pain sensitivity did not mediate the relationship between sleep quality and TMD.” http://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900%2816%2900521-6/abstract The relationship of TMD and Sleep is clearly explored in”CARDIOVASCULAR AND SLEEP-RELATED CONSEQUENCES OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS ” published by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the NIH https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/files/docs/workshops/tmj_wksp.pdf Even the TMJ Association reported in its latest news bites that “the rate of first-onset TMD was 50% higher in participants whose sleep quality at enrollment was poor compared to those with good sleep quality. I had the honor of writing the guest editorial Cranio. 2013 Jan;31(1):1-2. “TMJ alias, The Great Imposter, has a co-conspirator: poor sleep.” in Cranio when it changed its name from “THE JOURNAL OF CRANIOMANDIBULAR PRACTICE” to “THE JOURNAL OF CRANIOMANDIBULAR AND SLEEP PRACTICE” The following link will take you to my article: http://www.pubfacts.com/fulltext/23461255/TMJ-alias-The-Great-Imposter-has-a-co-conspirator-poor-sleep

TMJ AND POOR SLEEP LINKED!

Poor Sleep precedes the onset of Painful Temporomandibular Disorder

“•Subjective sleep quality worsened progressively before the onset of painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
•Sleep quality was stable over time in participants who remained free of TMD.
•Sleep quality was a stronger predictor of TMD than well established TMD risk factors.
•Worsening sleep quality did not predict an increase in pain sensitivity.
•Pain sensitivity did not mediate the relationship between sleep quality and TMD.”
