Sleep Apnea treatment is essential for good health. There are numerous medical issues associated with sleep apnea including metabolic problems, cardiac problems, problems with cognition memory.

The most prescribed treatment is CPAP but only 25% of patients accept CPAP therapy and utilize it as recommended. Over 90% of patients prefer oral appliances over CPAP when offered a choice.
Chicago Patient Testimonials describe patients experiences with oral appliances.

Recent outcome studies have shown that patients do as well by physiologic outcome measures with oral appliances as they do with CPAP. Overal appliances are a first line treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea and an alternative for severe apnea when patients don’t tolerate or don’t want CPAP treatment. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine both promote the appropriate use of oral appliances. Dr Shapira is a long standing member of both groups and a founding member of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society which became todays Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is also a charter member of DOSA, The Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea and a Diplomate, of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Treatment of sleep apnea is essential. CPAP was once considered the Gold Standard of Care but today Oral Appliances are considered a First Line Approach equal to CPAP for mild to moderate Sleep Apnea and an alternative for severe apnea when the patient does not tolerate or prefers oral appliance therapy.

Outcome studies for cardiac, blood pressure and cognitive measures are equal and sometimes oral appliances rate higher than CPAP.
